Internships at the Free Market Project

Internships offered at the Free Market Project focus on FMP’s goal of bringing balance to the media’s coverage of the free enterprise system. FMP interns play an integral role in this effort and work directly with FMP Director Dan Gainor in project assignments. An internship at FMP is an asset to anyone interested in careers in economics, journalism, mass media, public relations, marketing, or government. Through an internship at FMP, individuals will learn to identify media bias concerning current economic issues, to analyze coverage trends, and to present a balanced view of the issues.

Interns are involved in a number of different tasks, including monitoring, researching, and writing about daily news coverage of economic issues and conducting research for FMP’s special reports. In addition to working at FMP’s office in Alexandria, Va, interns have the opportunity to attend lectures in the Washington, D.C., metro area concerning the media, economics and other issues of interest.

FMP interns also benefit from being a part of the Media Research Center’s Youth Education and Internship Program. As participants in this program, interns receive extra attention, participate in weekly workshops about the strategies and efforts of each division of the MRC, and are afforded time to attend functions and events outside the office.

Students nationwide are encouraged to apply for an internship with FMP. Interns are compensated and have the option of working up to 37.5 hours per week while earning academic credit, if offered by the intern’s university. Candidates should have strong writing and research skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Internet use. They should bring a firm understanding of the conservative principles of limited government and free enterprise as well as knowledge of current events, especially economic news and events.

Internships are conducted January 31-April 22 for Spring Semester, May 16-August 12 for Summer, and September 12-December 9 for Fall Semester. Deadlines for submitting internship materials are as follows: January 1 for Spring, April 15 for Summer, and August 15 for Fall.

Those wishing to be considered for an internship with FMP should submit an application form, cover letter, resume, and two to three brief writing samples. Send application materials to:
